What Does a SaaS Writer Really Need to Know About a Company?

saas writer hero image

As a SaaS writer, I’m always looking for new companies to shout-out and feature in my posts.

That’s why I’m totally okay with getting pitched all the time.

That said, it’s a bummer when I come across a promising product with a website or social presence that makes me wary.

And in some cases, companies make it nearly impossible to write about their products.

If you’re on the hunt for recent B2B marketing statistics, you’ve come to the right place.

The problem, though? Digging for B2B marketing statistics can be a drag.

Can “Quality Content” Survive in an Era of Low-Effort Clickbait?

I don’t know about you, but I’m fascinated by the weird world of e-celebrities and Internet trainwrecks. Not exactly quality content.

What can I say? Let’s call it a guilty pleasure.

Yet the more time I spend (read: waste) on sites like YouTube, the more I question the concept of “quality content” altogether.

Are “Likes” and shares truly the measuring stick for quality? Does a fierce flame-war in the comments section mean that you’re doing something right?

Although comparing the world of viral videos to written marketing content may be apples and oranges, you would think that we play by similar rules when it comes to content, right?

We strive to be creative. We want engagement and exposure. The list goes on.

But here’s the question: how do we assess quality in an era where our feeds are flooded with a constant stream of clickbait and low-effort content?

Not Everything You Write Needs to be a “Greatest Hit”

If you’re grinding out content on a regular basis, you’re probably working too hard.

Relax.

Sure, many writers and marketers break their backs as a badge of honor.

But is worth that creeping sense of burnout and constant head fog? Is it worth losing sleep over?

Probably not.

There is No “Special Sauce” for Becoming a Better Writer

Here’s a story that I’ve never told anyone before.noun_98458_cc

Don’t judge me.

A few days after my 25th birthday, I realized that I had never eaten a Big Mac before.

Seriously. How had I gone a quarter of a century without experiencing what’s considered by many to be a cornerstone of Americana?

I didn’t know much about the burger itself except for its “special sauce.” Needless to say, I was intrigued.

After all, nobody can resist the allure of a secret ingredient.

What does this have to do with marketing content?

We’re getting there.

Why Mediocre Content is Marvelous News for Writers

Mediocre content. Let’s be real: it’s not hard to find if you’re a B2B writer.

“Holy crap, this blog sucks. Somebody got paid for this?”mediocre content hero image

Every single time this internal dialogue happens, you should jump for joy.

Hear me out.

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come across a piece of B2B blog content and reveled in how dull or dry it was.

Now, I’m not tooting my own horn here. I’m sure you can dig through my previous work and find some cliched, cringe-worthy crap.

Yet that doesn’t change the fact that there are hordes of writers out there making bank right now even though they lack knowledge of the craft because, well, they can.

These people aren’t traditional writers. They don’t know what “voice” is. They think “syntax” is the name of a metal band.

Not fair, right? Meanwhile, you’re sitting there with your dogeared copy of The Elements of Style thinking “how the hell do they get away with it?”
